An independent developer has released an open-source alternative to Apple's Reference Image that uses steganography to embed cryptographic proof of an image's origin directly into the pixel data. Titled Proof of Capture, this project provides a transparent and decentralized method for verifying digital media authenticity without relying on proprietary technology.
